Afghan Professor Protests By Tearing Up Diplomas On TV, Says If His “Mother And Sister Can’t Study…” – Culture

A Kabul University professor has protested against the ban on women education by tearing up his diplomas on a news channel. The video clip of him saying that ‘if his mother and sister cannot study he does not need the diplomas’ has gone viral on social media.

The video was shared by Shabnam Nasimi, former policy advisor to the Minister for Afghan Resettlement & Minister for Refugees. She wrote, “Astonishing scenes as a Kabul university professor destroys his diplomas on live TV in Afghanistan.” Nasimi currently works as executive director of Conservative Friends of Afghanistan translated the professor’s statement in the tweet saying, “From today I don’t need these diplomas anymore because this country is no place for an education. If my sister & my mother can’t study, then I DON’T accept this education.”

The visuals come after a year of Taliban recapturing Afghanistan about twenty years after they had were driven out by US forces. According to reports, it was soon after Taliban seized power in the country restrictions were imposed on the women’s lives in terms of education and more. The education ban drew widespread criticism, but no changes were made.

Everyone lauded the professor for his courage and passion. While some shared mutual respect the others said, the could not imagine how hard it must have been for him to say it on national TV.

According to reports, teenage girls have been banned from secondary education and university intake meanwhile, changes in university rules from gender-segregated classrooms and entrances were enforced. Younger girls were permitted to be taught by women professoros or old men.

Minister for Higher Education Neda Mohammad Nadeem revealed that a letter had been issued to all government and private universities by the Taliban leaders saying, “You all are informed to immediately implement the mentioned order of suspending education of females until further notice.”
